Our Cookies Policy

What is a Cookie?

A cookie is a small text file stored on your computer or mobile device containing data related to a website you visit. It may allow a website “remember” your actions or preferences over a period of time, or it may contain data related to the function or delivery of the site. Cookies can be set by the owner of the website or in some cases by third party service providers, to which the website owner has given permission to present other information, run content or provide other functionality such as analytics.

Further information on cookies can be found at the Europa.eu website.

The Charities Regulator operates Cookies in accordance with the EU ePrivacy Directive (2002/58/EC as amended by 2009/136/EC), and the Irish ePrivacy Regulations, implemented by Statutory Instrument (S.I.) No. 336 of 2011 which complement GDPR.

Why are there cookies on CharitiesRegulator.ie?

Some cookies are essential for our website to work. Without these essential cookies, the website would not work as smoothly as possible and some of our features or services may be unavailable. Other cookies allow website users to navigate between pages efficiently, remembering preferences and improving the browsing experience. They can also help to create advertisements seen online are relevant.

How are cookies used on CharitiesRegulator.ie?

The cookies used on CharitiesRegulator.ie may be either First Party or Third Party cookies. First Party cookies are set by our own website. Third Party cookies are set by a host other than CharitiesRegulator.ie and are accessible on any website that loads the third party server’s code. The hosts for cookies on CharitiesRegulator.ie are outlined in Section 5.0 below.
Cookies also have a lifespan. Session cookies, for example, are designed to function only for the duration of the browser session or slightly longer and are set to expire once they have fulfilled their limited purpose. Persistent cookies are those placed on a computer or mobile device for a pre-determined length of time when a site is visited.  They allow the site to deliver functions between browser sessions and repeat visits. The lifespan of each of the cookies used on CharitiesRegulator.ie is outlined in Section 5 below.

What types of cookie are used on CharitiesRegulator.ie?

The Charities Regulator website uses 4 different types of cookie(s). The user will be informed of the cookies used by the Charities regulator upon the first visit. Each user has the option to manage [Cookie Settings] or to [Accept All] cookies. If you select [Cookie Settings], all cookie types except for Essential Cookies have a default setting of [Off]. Additionally the Charities Regulator website has the function to reject all cookies available.

Essential Cookies are necessary for the website to function and cannot be switched off in our systems. They are usually only set in response to actions made by you which amount to a request for services, such as setting privacy preferences, logging in or filling in forms. You can set your browser to block or alert you about these cookies, which may cause some parts of the site to not work. These cookies do not store any personally identifiable information.

Personalisation Cookies enable the website to provide enhanced functionality and personalisation. They may be set by the Charities Regulator or by third party providers whose services have been added to our pages. If the user does not allow these cookies, then some or all of these services may not function properly.

Analytics Cookies allow the Charities Regulator to count visits and traffic sources, to measure and improve the performance of our site. They show which pages are the most and least popular and how visitors move around the site. All information collected by these cookies is aggregated and therefore anonymous. If the user does not allow these cookies, the Charities Regulator will not know the time of visit to the site, and will not be able to monitor the websites performance.

Marketing Cookies may be set by advertising partners. Companies may use these cookies to build a profile of user interests and show relevant adverts on other sites. They do not store directly personal information, but are based on uniquely identifying browser and internet device. If the user does not allow these cookies, they will experience less targeted advertising.

YouTube videos embedded on our website may set cookies even if users do not interact with them. While we attempt to restrict tracking by disabling non-essential cookies by default, YouTube's standard embedding may still load cookies. We recommend users review YouTube's Privacy Policy for more information. If you do not wish to receive these cookies, you may choose to avoid interacting with embedded videos or disable third-party cookies in your browser settings.
