The Charities Regulator welcomes the signing into law of the Charities (Amendment) Act 2024 by President Michael D. Higgins. The Act includes a series of revisions and updates to the Charities Act 2009, including the addition of the advancement of human rights as a charitable purpose, provisions for greater financial transparency and defining charity trustee duties. The changes will require ministerial commencement orders before they can come into operation.
The Charities Regulator is engaging with the Department of Rural and Community Development on the implementation of the changes. We will be developing guidance for charity trustees and others involved in managing or advising charities as well as updating our systems, where necessary, in line with the commencement of the changes so that charities have the information they need to assess the potential implications of the changes for their organisation, and the steps they may need to take.
